Hello and kia ora,

Was I destined to be an interior designer? Who knows, but I've always been creative, and what I really wanted to do in my younger days was psychology.

And so, it occurs to me, what better grounding for working deeply with people and being trusted with the spaces and places they hold most dear? Now, as an internationally experienced interior designer, I'd love to tell you a bit more about myself …

Dubai … land of superyachts and bling

During my early interior design career I was based in Dubai, learning from and working with some of the best designers in the world. I worked on residential and educational projects in locations including Switzerland, Kenya, UAE, New York, Saudi and Qatar.

But the highlight of my career in Dubai was leading the design and installation of superyacht interiors for the royal family - uncompromising, to say the least!.  It was an exciting time, and an experience that made me the designer I am today.

Away to New Zealand

In a change of direction, I then settled with my family in Nelson.  This brought a change in my professional direction too, as I taught interior design at NMIT for the next 8 years.

But in 2022, with my children rapidly growing up, my husband and I decided it was time for me to get back to the coal face, and I established my own interior design practice. Sarmya Clayton Interior Design was born.

Sarmya Clayton Interior Design

I started out with two key goals for my company:

First, to provide high-end interior design with exceptional service and bringing my wealth of experience to the people of Nelson and New Zealand.  Second, to elevate and advocate for the interior design industry in New Zealand.

My design language is not about pushing trends onto a space, but about understanding the home-owner's journey and where they are in their life and stage. I can create effortless spaces that work and make you feel at ease. Practical and functional, but also beautiful and balanced. Timeless and enduring, but also striking.

I hold a deep knowledge of the principles and elements of design.  It is my ability to listen and ask the right questions which allows me to turn a client's dreams and ideas into reality.  But I'm also guided by the space.  What are the opportunities arising from the architectural wrapper, the views, natural light, and the place of the building in its surrounding environment? My aim is to provide the kind of “quiet luxury” that can only come from expert knowledge of the design process and materials.

So how can I help you?

I'd love to work with you on all aspects of your interior, whether it’s a full design for your dream home or office, or just providing some recommendations on floor coverings and colour.  Please see the home page of this website for more information on my services, and some testimonials from other clients who I have worked with.

If you feel that I could help you on your building journey, or if you have any questions, please peruse the rest of this website and give me a call or send me an email.

No matter your budget, I'd love to hear from you and help you get underway.

Yours, Sarmya
